Journalist Charles Watts has hailed Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka as the club’s player of the season so far.

Watts chose the Switzerland midfielder over the likes of Gabriel Jesus, William Saliba, Thomas Partey and Gabriel Martinelli.

It’s hard to argue with his pick given that the 30-year-old has scored three goals and assisted another three in 14 Premier League appearances from the middle of the park.

He has enjoyed a new lease of life as a No 8 in the Gunners setup and has played a pivotal role with the north London club sitting five points clear at the top of the table.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Watts said: “There’s just so many to choose from, but having said all that, my player of the season so far for Arsenal has to be Granit Xhaka.

“Consistency levels off the charts, chipping in with goals, assists, just bringing so much to the team and I think, for me, he has been the star of the season so far for Arsenal.”

TIF Thoughts on Watts’ comments…

Have you been impressed by Granit Xhaka this season?

Xhaka has certainly had a love/hate relationship with Arsenal supporters over the years, but this most recent chapter will be sure to leave fans with a positive lasting impression if it continues.

Last season, he finished the campaign with an average 6.67 match rating (as per WhoScored).

However, this term the £100k-per-week ace has been operating at a higher level at 7.00, leaving the 106-cap ace ranked seventh among his teammates – higher than William Saliba, Ben White and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Only Saka and Jesus have provided more assists than the Swiss dynamo, highlighting his improvements in attacking areas, and the ex-skipper is certainly thriving in a slightly more advanced role with Partey behind him.
