Journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Arsenal are really pushing to sign Gabriel Martinelli to a new contract in the near future and feel ‘optimistic’ about the situation.

The Gunners are flying at the moment and currently sit at the top of the Premier League table having played 13 games and won all but two.

At the heart of that, Martinelli has impressed on the wing with five goals and two assists. However, for all the excitement about the player, there could be some concern that he won’t agree to a new contract, with his current deal set to expire in 2024.

In a positive update on the situation, though, Romano has explained that in ‘the next days and weeks’, Arsenal will push to get the deal sorted, so it looks as though everything is heading in the right direction.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said: “With Gabriel Martinelli, they are pushing and pushing again in the next days and weeks. They are really optimistic, also Martinelli [is too].

“The contract of Martinelli is until 2024. I’m told there is an option to extend the contract for a further season. So Arsenal feel relaxed on this Martinelli story, but they want to give him an improved contract.

“So they are discussing also with Martinelli, with his agents. We have a lot of stories on other clubs, but Martinelli is happy with Arsenal.

“And of course, winning games is really important because all these players are tempted by staying [in the] long term with the Arsenal project.”

TIF Thoughts on Gabriel Martinelli and Arsenal…

Martinelli is clearly one of the most talented youngsters at the club, and possibly even in the Premier League. This is backed up by the fact that he will be starring alongside the likes of Neymar and Arsenal teammate Gabriel Jesus at the World Cup having made the Brazil squad.

Such is his quality, it seems likely that some top European sides will be keeping a careful eye on his contractual situation, as it will expire during the summer after next.

Therefore, it’s understandable that Mikel Arteta and co will be desperate to hand him a new deal. Luckily, it seems as though Martinelli is pretty keen too, even telling the press recently that Arsenal ‘just need a pen’.

Of course, he may be happy, but his agents will want the best deal possible, so it may take a little time to work out all the details. But it certainly sounds as if things are also going well on that front following this latest update from Romano.
