Journalist Charles Watts has claimed that Arsenal will not be making a contract decision on Reiss Nelson this January.

The English winger is now into the final year of his current deal and recently spoke to the press about how much he would like to commit his long-term future to the Premier League club.

Indeed, he told the Evening Standard earlier in November: “I am an Arsenal fan and, of course, I want to sign a new contract at the club. I am just going to be ready for anything I get now and give my all for the team.”

However, it seems as though Arsenal are in no rush at this stage to make any key decisions in the near future if the latest talk is to be believed.

Indeed, while speaking about the player on his own YouTube channel, Watts said that he does not expect anything to happen on that front in January.

He explained (10:30): “He’s got the quality, he can beat a man, he can score goals. It’s just about whether he can kind of do that on a consistent basis and whether that’s enough for Arsenal to give him a new contract.

“Personally, I’m not entirely sure. But you know, nothing is going to happen in January. So I still think he’s got six months to really prove his worth at Arsenal and prove that he warrants a new contract.

“And if he can continue getting his head down. If he can continue training the way he does and continue performing when he does get an opportunity on the pitch, then maybe he does have a long-term future here.”

TIF thoughts on Reiss Nelson and Arsenal…

Nelson reminded everyone of his quality in a recent Premier League win when he scored twice and provided an assist against Nottingham Forest. He then followed that up by setting up the only goal for Arsenal in their Carabao Cup defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Still just 22 years of age, Nelson may yet develop into a top player but it really does depend on whether or not he can deliver on a consistent basis, as opposed to just flashes of occasional magic (as referenced in those aforementioned games).

At least, by the sounds of it, it does seem as though he has until the end of the season to prove himself good enough for the Gunners before they make a final call on his future.
