Journalist Dean Jones has sensationally claimed that Paris Saint-Germain’s Lionel Messi could play in America’s Major League Soccer one day.

The Barcelona legend’s PSG contract runs out at the end of the season, and whilst there is an option for an extra year, there has been talk about a return to the Camp Nou, as well as a move elsewhere.

With Cristiano Ronaldo now a free agent following his release from Manchester United, there has been much speculation about where the two arguably greatest players ever could see out their careers.

Jones has claimed that both could play in the same league again, with the two rivals potentially joining clubs in the MLS, bringing their European eras to a close.

“I think there’ll be a time when both Messi and Ronaldo are playing in MLS at the same time. I’d be amazed if there wasn’t one season where they were up against each other in that league,” Jones told GIVEMESPORT.

“I know from speaking to people in America, that there has always been a desire to try and make it happen.”

TIF thoughts on Messi…

Although he is not what he used to be, at the age of 35 Messi is still impressing, with 12 goals and 14 assists in 19 PSG games this season.

He’s still delivering a high level of output, and his time in Europe may not be over just yet.

Messi will aim to bring a first Champions League title to PSG, but should he depart before then, there may be unfinished business at Barcelona, with his former teammate Xavi currently managing the Blaugrana.

A final move to America could eventually happen, but perhaps not soon enough to face off with Ronaldo, given his current status as a free agent.

The pair have not played in the same league since Ronaldo departed La Liga in 2018, and whilst one final battle may be on the cards, an MLS showdown will pale in comparison to their glory days in Spain.
