Journalist Josh Bunting has been left stunned after young Sunderland Alex Bass goalkeeper admitted he scored a goal using his hand in their latest Premier League 2 Division 2 clash.

The Black Cats’ U21s faced a Tyne-Wear derby earlier this week as they took on rivals Newcastle United. In typical fashion, the game was not lacking in drama as it ended 1-1.

Indeed, with the Magpies looking destined for all three points after Joe White scored during the first half, Sunderland managed to snatch a last-gasp winner thanks to their goalkeeper.

However, after the game, Bass made a shocking confession. Indeed, he told media: “I have to admit that I handballed it, I didn’t think it was going to be given.”

In reaction to this, Bunting took to Twitter to say: “Oh my lord the plot thickens.”

TIF Thoughts on the incident and Sunderland…

While Newcastle players, coaches, and fans will no doubt be furious to have dropped points in such a controversial manner, those at Sunderland will likely be revelling in their very own ‘hand of god’ moment.

Judging from his comments, Bass certainly doesn’t seem too concerned about trying to defend or cover up his gamechanging – and rule-bending – actions at the death.

The 24-year-old has had to sit on the bench in the Championship for the senior side most of this season, but in only his second appearance for the U21s in this competition, he certainly made a big contribution (via Transfermarkt).

As a consequence of the draw, the Black Cats remain third from bottom in the league, six points behind their big rivals, who sit fifth in Division 2.
