Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings has been called out by Paul Merson ahead of Villa’s upcoming game on Thursday against Fulham.

The Sky Sports pundit has been discussing the upcoming round of Premier League games in his latest column for Sportskeeda where he has questioned Mings ahead of his battle against Aleksandar Mitrovic.

It was a weekend to forget for the English centre-back after his error in the first half of their game against Chelsea saw Mason Mount open the scoring.

Reports are circulating around Villa Park of a potential departure for Steven Gerrard following their poor start to the campaign.

And after what has been a turbulent couple of months for the 29-year-old under Gerrard, Merson is concerned for the defender ahead of the trip to Craven Cottage:

“I worry for Tyrone Mings against Mitrovic. If Fulham get the ball into the box, I think Mitrovic gets the better of him. Aston Villa are not great at the moment but they did do well yesterday, despite their defeat,” said Merson.

TIF Thoughts on Merson’s comments…

It is understandable to see why Merson would be concerned for Mings ahead of Thursday with the Serbian striker having made a seriously impressive start to the campaign.

Mitrovic has now scored seven in his opening nine Premier League games and is rivalling the likes of Harry Kane near the top of the goal scorer charts.

In comparison, Mings has now played eight times in the league and on just two occasions have Villa been able to keep a clean sheet.

But with Villa seriously struggling, it feels like this could be a must-win game for Gerrard.
