Newcastle United striker Chris Wood will have been left in agony having picked up an injury whilst away with New Zealand on international duty.

This has been suggested by the injury expert Ben Dinnery who has been speaking to Football Insider ahead of Newcastle’s game on Saturday.

It has been a tricky start to the new campaign for Eddie Howe’s side and their efforts have certainly been hindered by injuries to some of their main men.

And none more so than in attack with Callum Wilson enduring his own injury issue, Alexander Isak returning from the international break early and now Wood appears to have a problem.

The striker suffered a rib injury whilst away with New Zealand and Dinnery believes it is an issue which will seriously affect the 30-year-old.

He said: “Typically, people will think it’s a rib fracture. But we could actually be talking about rib separation. That fits more with blunt force trauma, which we know he suggested he had got from a challenge.

“That basically means his rib has been separated from his cartilage and sternum. Sometimes, when you have that impact, you can hear that pop.

“This can be very intense, localised pain, especially when breathing hard. All this fits with how Wood described the injury and the effects after that challenge.

“You hope it’s on the less severe end of the scale. These sorts of injuries do respond well to conservative treatment but we could still be talking about several weeks out.”

TIF Thoughts on Dinnery’s comments…

This will certainly be a concern for Howe with Wood expected to provide the Toon with another attacking option from the bench with Isak out of action.

Should Newcastle sell Wood?

Since joining in the January window, Wood has certainly struggled to hit any type of form for the Magpies with just three goals in his 25 appearances.

However, with Wilson’s unfortunate injury record, having another striker on the bench is certainly what Howe will want but that seems as if it may be a tough ask for Wood this weekend with Howe admitting it will be a late decision.
