Liverpool have been slammed by Paddy Kenny as “disgusting” following the proposal from Premier League sides to scrap FA Cup replays.
The former Premier League goalkeeper has been speaking to Football Insider about the potential change to the traditional English competition.
According to reports, Premier League clubs are in favour of a huge change to the FA Cup which would see replays scrapped amid their seriously congested schedule.
Liverpool are one of the clubs who will suffer from a fixture pile-up. For example, this month alone, Jurgen Klopp’s men will have to play nine games including trips outside of the country.
However, Kenny has not held back in his thoughts over the potential changes pushed onto the FA Cup by Premier League side’s such as Liverpool:
“I think it’s disgusting,” said Kenny.
“How can you take away replays? These smaller clubs try to get a draw, well, they try to win but they will take a draw at home in the FA Cup to get that payday away at a big club like Liverpool.
“That is important to a lot of players and clubs. There are a lot of games for clubs like Liverpool but they have big enough squads, don’t they?
“Do you know what I mean? Playing the Under-21s in the Carabao Cup, what a load of rubbish that is. This is a big club, can’t you get into Europe by winning the cups?
“That could be your way in if you aren’t doing well enough in the league. To think they want to just play the Under-21s, I think it’s disrespectful to all the lower league sides.”
TIF Thoughts on Kenny’s comments…
We can understand where Kenny is coming from as it would be the smaller clubs who could miss out on big replays at the likes of Anfield and Old Trafford.
Do you want FA Cup replays scrapped?
Yes
No
However, it is believed the potential change would come with the financial backing to see club’s from the lower league’s still profit as they would if they were to earn a replay.
If this is the case then we do not agree with Kenny’s harsh evaluation with clubs like Liverpool who play in Europe too having so many games to contend in already.
