It doesn’t seem plausible that Steven Gerrard would make a return to Rangers if Giovanni van Bronckhorst is sacked.
That is according to journalist Dean Jones, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the latest news from Ibrox.
Following the side’s miserable campaign in the Champions League, in which it is already impossible for them to qualify for the knockout stages, Van Bronckhorst finds himself under real pressure to keep his job.
A 1-1 draw at home to Livingston in the Premiership last weekend and another heavy Champions League defeat will have done nothing to ease the tension surrounding Ibrox, with the Dutchman potentially walking on very thin ice despite coming from behind to beat Aberdeen in Glasgow earlier today.
Having managed Rangers before jumping ship to Aston Villa, Gerrard could well be tempted at a return to Ibrox following his sacking from the West Midlands giants last week, but Jones cannot see a potential reunion on the cards.
He said: “I just don’t see it as plausible that Gerrard returns.
“I mean, if you think of what he’s like as a man and as a football figure, he’s not the sort of person that’s going to take two steps back.
“He’s going to learn from what happened at Aston Villa and probably look for a completely fresh challenge.
“I don’t think he would think, ‘oh, well I’ll just go back to where I was comfortable and where I’m safe’.”
TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…
We also cannot envisage a situation in which Gerrard returns to Rangers and Scottish football at this moment in time due to the fact he has now gained more experience following almost a year in charge of an English Premier League club.
We think that the Liverpool legend will have ambitions of managing in England’s top flight again and we think that he would be more likely to drop down into the Championship in search of another job rather than a return to Ibrox.
Therefore, in this instance, we agree with Jones and believe that too many unlikely scenarios would have to fall into place for Gerrard to take the reins at Rangers once again.
