Journalist Derek Clark would be surprised if Rangers and Northern Ireland midfielder Steven Davis was still playing at Ibrox next season.

Clark was speaking on Thursday morning’s Rangers Review briefing following the club’s 7-1 defeat in the Champions League.

Davis joined Rangers from Southampton in 2019, having initially had a spell at the club between 2008-2012.

The 37-year-old has made 355 appearances for the Gers across both of his spells at Ibrox, scoring 26 goals and providing 70 assists, according to Transfermarkt.

However, Clark believes that time could be up for Davis come the end of his contract this summer.

“You’ve got so many players out of contract next summer and I think they need to be moved on.

“The likes of Davis, I’m not too sure if he’ll continue playing at Ibrox. I’d be amazed if that was the case.”

TIF Thoughts on Clark’s comments…

We think that given his age, the 128-cap Northern Ireland international’s time at Ibrox may be coming to an end at the conclusion of this season – especially with the club potentially looking at a rebuild next summer.

The experienced midfielder, who had been labelled as “instrumental” by former boss Steven Gerrard, has provided plenty of effort and guile over his two spells at Ibrox, most notably helping the Glasgow giants to four league titles.

However, it may be time to bring in some fresh faces and young blood into the middle of the park for the Gers next summer, and we therefore think that the club should give a big thank-you to Davis, but ultimately accept that now is the right time to move on.
