Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart could find his regular place in the club’s starting line-up in jeopardy.

That is according to former Hoops man Frank McAvennie, who was speaking to Football Insider about the latest news from Parkhead.

Hart signed for Celtic in August 2021 after a spell at Tottenham Hotspur, and helped the Glasgow giants wrestle the Premiership title back from city rivals Rangers.

The former Manchester City goalkeeper made a costly error in Ange Postecoglou’s side’s 3-1 defeat at RB Leipzig last week, which led to the Bundesliga side scoring their second goal of the evening.

And McAvennie believes that following the signing of Dundee United goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist in the summer, Hart’s position could be under threat.

“I am afraid to say that there is a damn good keeper in the wings,” McAvennie told Football Insider.

“There was no way he could find a player [against Leipzig]. We’d just been let off the hook and he gives it straight back to them. It was embarrassing. It wasn’t even close to getting to anyone. Just get it up the park and start again.

“But listen he saved some great chances as well, so he showed what his worth was. There is a balancing act but he can’t keep doing that or he is going to be in trouble for his position because we have another really good keeper biting to get in.”

TIF Thoughts on McAvennie’s comments

We agree with McAvennie and believe that Hart’s mistake was a really poor piece of play from the experienced goalkeeper, with the side just getting away with conceding a goal following an intervention from VAR.

However, we do feel that Hart is still a very good goalkeeper for that level, and his position shouldn’t be under too much threat despite that poor error of judgement.

Therefore, we are inclined to disagree with McAvennie in this particular instance, though we do agree that Siegrist is a solid option to replace the 75-time England stopper.
