Wolves would be taking a gamble if they appointed former Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui following the sacking of Bruno Lage.

That is according to journalist Dean Jones, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the latest developments from Molineux.

Wolves resorted to sacking Lage after the side’s 2-0 defeat at West Ham United last weekend, leaving the West Midlands side in the Premier League relegation zone having spent over £100m on transfers this summer.

And according to John Percy of the Telegraph, Lopetegui and Mainz’s Bo Svensson are two of the club’s top targets to replace Lage, with Steve Davis taking charge of today’s clash against Chelsea.

But Jones, speaking prior to Lopetegui’s own sacking, believes that there’s a lot to consider for the club as they weigh up the prospect of appointing Lopetegui.

“Lopetegui, obviously he’s got his own position to weigh up right now.

“Might be a bit more of a gamble, I would say.

“So yeah, there’s a lot to consider there.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

We agree that it would be a gamble and perhaps a sideways step if Wolves were to appoint Lopetegui this summer.

Having almost taken the job in 2016 before being appointed Spain manager, the Spaniard has since managed Real Madrid and Sevilla – winning the Europa League title with the latter in 2020.

However, after losing his job having left his side sitting 17th in La Liga and just a point above the drop zone, scoring just seven goals along the way, with goalscoring a very familiar problem in Wolverhampton, it could even seem a foolish move on paper.

Therefore, we think that it may be best if Wolves go in a different direction in search of Lage’s successor and potentially aim for a manager who is known for a front-footed style of play.
