Presenter Dan Lawless has slammed David Moyes for his comments on West Ham United forward Said Benrahma, claiming that the manager has a ‘strange dislike’ for the Algerian.

With 15 goals and 15 assists in 98 outings for the Hammers, the winger has shown plenty of glimpses of his top quality for the club. Still, it’s hard to shake the feeling that he has never truly been trusted by his manager.

For instance, so far in the Premier League this term, Benrahma has started just four games. On top of this, some recent quotes from Moyes certainly seem to suggest something amiss in the pair’s relationship.

When speaking in a press conference earlier this week for West Ham, Moyes said (via Hammers.news): “Said’s English, for the amount of time he’s been here, has not been great. But I’ve got to say, Nayef [Aguerd] – brilliant English; Gianluca [Scamacca] – brilliant English; Emerson [Palmieri] – fantastic English; strangely enough, [Lucas] Paqueta can’t speak it, but I think he understands it.”

In reaction to this damning claim, West Ham Fan TV man Lawless took to Twitter to say: “No one can tell me Moyes doesn’t have a strange dislike of Benrahma. He can praise the new signings without bringing down Said. Anyone who has tried to learn another language knows how hard it is.”

TIF Thoughts on Said Benrahma and West Ham…

Benrahma may have been in England since leaving Nice for Brentford back in 2018, but it’s not as if Moyes ever learned Spain when he was working as Real Sociedad manager.

The Scot admitted as much in the same press conference, saying: “I tried my nuts off to speak Spanish and I think if I’d got another year I might have got better – well, I would have definitely been speaking it if I’d got another year at it.

“So I’m not one maybe to comment on them because I do it, but the fact of the matter is we do [want them to speak English].”

The fact is though, it’s perhaps a little flawed of Moyes to call out someone else for failing with their attempts to pick up a new language having not done this himself.

Around the same time Benrahma joined West Ham, Moyes actually spoke about having wanted to sign Eberechi Eze from QPR before he moved to Crystal Palace instead. With that in mind, it looks as though the Algerian may have not even been his first-choice target.

Perhaps that goes some way to explaining this possible ‘dislike’ Lawless seems to think exists between the two. Either way, it does seem as if Benrahma has a fair bit of work to do to truly impress his boss.
