Tottenham Hotspur may have a buy-back clause in Sunderland left-back Dennis Cirkin’s deal at the Stadium of Light.

That is according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the latest transfer news from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham sold Cirkin to Sunderland in the summer of 2021 for an undisclosed fee, but The Sun’s Alan Nixon has reported that the club may be interested in re-signing the 20-year-old when the opportunity arises.

The report goes on to say that Spurs could sign their former prospect with the intention of selling him on to another club as part of a money-raising scheme for the north London club.

Interestingly, O’Rourke believes that the club may have a buy-back option – but suggested that having already secured the signature of Udinese’s Destiny Udogie, the club may not be prioritising a deal to bring Cirkin back to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He said: “There is talk that there is a buy-back clause in his contract, which we see a lot of foreign clubs do when they let some of their younger players leave.

“If he continues to progress and continues to play well for Sunderland, I’m sure Tottenham and other clubs will be monitoring him.

“But Tottenham have already agreed a deal for the boy from Udinese [Udogie] at left-back, so it’s probably not a priority position for them right now.”

TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments…

We would be surprised if the only reason Spurs were interested in re-signing Cirkin would be to sell him on for a profit, with the money they earn in a potential deal likely to be minimal, compared to the time and effort it will take to re-sign the left-back.

However, the young man, who has been described as an “athletic” full-back by The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare, has proved to be a success since moving north in the summer of 2021, playing 41 times for the Wearside club last season as he played a part in the club’s promotion back to the Championship.

The two-time England U20 international has also made eight appearances in the club’s return to the second-tier this season, and is just returning to fitness after suffering an injury at the start of September.

Therefore, we think that it would be in Cirkin’s best interests to remain at the Stadium of Light, so he can continue his development by getting regular gametime in the Championship.
