WhoScored writer Ben McAleer has slammed Tottenham Hotspur defender Emerson Royal after his terrible effort at goal in the club’s most recent game.

In the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, Spurs travelled away from home to the south of England to play Bournemouth as they aimed to keep pace with the top of the division.

Tottenham endured a pretty disappointing first half, however, and struggled to dominate the game with the Cherries taking the lead thanks to Kieffer Moore.

With Spurs chasing an equaliser at the time, Emerson tried his luck from distance but ended up volleying the ball well over the crossbar and out of the stadium – as seen in this footage shared online.

In reaction to this poor attempt at goal, a frustrated McAleer took to Twitter to say: “I’m convinced Emerson has something on Conte, surely the only reason he continues to start.”

TIF Thoughts on Emerson Royal and Spurs…

It seems as though McAleer wasn’t the only one to stop this horrible effort on goal, with presenter Chris Cowlin noting that the shot went ‘out of the ground, over the stand and in the car park!’

Writing on Twitter, he also claimed this left many Spurs fans calling for Djed Spence to be introduced. Alasdair Gold also seemed to share this sentiment as he took a dig at Antonio Conte’s team selection in reference to Spence, writing: “If only Spurs had signed a right wing-back with a bit of pace and the ability to get past a man this summer, and with experience of playing against Bournemouth this year.”

In the end, the Brazilian was subbed after 63 minutes with 0/4 attempted crosses, 1 shot off target (and into the stands), 11 losses of possession and 0/2 aerial duels won (via SofaScore).

All in all, it is clear to see why his and Tottenham’s efforts, particularly during the first half, were derided by many.
