Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane must step aside from taking free-kicks in games, with Son Heung-min impressing once again from dead-ball situations in recent weeks.

This has been suggested by the Spurs insider John Wenham, who has been speaking to Football Insider ahead of the return to Premier League action on the weekend.

Spurs will be thrown into the deep end on Saturday as they return to action with the north London derby which could see them go top of the Premier League table with three points.

And Antonio Conte’s men are going into the game in fine form as they remain just one of two sides, alongside Manchester City, yet to taste defeat in the top flight.

However, Wenham believes Spurs could give themselves a big boost in front of goal in Kane is to allow the South Korean the opportunity to take free-kicks.

The Spurs striker typically steps up to take the free-kicks, but Son has shown his pedigree from set-pieces time and time again for South Korea – doing so again last week.

“Another Sonny free-kick. It once again begs the question, why is Harry Kane taking Tottenham’s free kicks? I don’t know,” said Wenham.

“It’s just ridiculous. Other clubs are chipping in with five or ten goals a season with free-kicks. I have actually spoken to one of the academy ‘keepers at Tottenham.

“I had to ask, because it has been bothering me no end. I asked, is Harry scoring loads of free kicks in training? Is that why he takes all the free kicks? I would understand that.

“He said no. A goalkeeper in first-team training now has told me that Sonny is scoring free-kicks in training. I cannot understand it.”

TIF Thoughts on Wenham’s comments…

We absolutely agree with Wenham. It is often painful watching Kane take free kicks with so many good opportunities to score squandered by the Spurs man.

It is apparent Kane sees this as another source of potential goals as he continues to hunt down Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League goal record.

However, the reality is he has only ever scored one free kick in the Premier League and that came eight years ago back in 2014 against Aston Villa.

There is some concern over Spurs’ inability to break teams down when the counter-attack is unavailable, however, putting Son on free-kicks could well provide them with a great opportunity in front of goal.
