Southampton have been backed to appoint a manager from abroad in the event Ralph Hasenhüttl is relieved of his duties in the near future.

This latest claim comes from journalist Dean Jones, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the latest news from St Mary’s.

Southampton have had a difficult start this season and headed into the weekend sitting in 17th place in the Premier League, having won two games and lost six from nine.

However, Hasenhüttl is not “thinking in this direction” with regard to being sacked, amid speculation that he may have lost his job after a 4-0 defeat at Manchester City.

The Austrian was appointed as manager of the Saints in December 2018 after a spell in charge of RB Leipzig in Germany, and Jones believes that the club could head down a similar direction if they were to hire a replacement.

He said: “If they stick to what they usually do, then we would expect a promising boss from abroad with big ideas and thinking long-term of how this club can remain in the Premier League and also be competitive in the Premier League.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments about Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton future…

We think that the logical prediction would be that Southampton will make an appointment in a similar vein to Hasenhüttl if the 55-year-old was to be relieved of his duties in the near future.

The club have appointed names such as Ronald Koeman, Claude Puel and Mauricio Pellegrino in the past, but it must be stated that Hasenhüttl’s predecessor was Mark Hughes, so it is possible that the south coast club could make an appointment closer to home.

Despite the increasing pressure, it looks for now as if Hasenhüttl will be keeping his job at St Mary’s for the time being, but it could be that he is merely keeping hold of his position as the Southampton hierarchy look for a suitable replacement amid their uninspiring form.
