Chris Wood should be in Southampton’s thinking when the January transfer window opens.

That’s according to journalist Dean Jones who has been speaking to This Is Futbol.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side moved up to 14th in the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Bournemouth in the week.

Che Adams’ goal proved decisive as he moved clear at the top of the club’s scoring charts with three but that is an area where the Saints have struggled.

They rank 15th in the division for goals scored with strikers Adam Armstrong (1) and Sekou Mara (0) struggling to make their mark.

Now Jones has claimed that Wood could be an option for the south-coast side when the market reopens this winter.

He said: ”It hasn’t really been mooted, but I can see why it probably should be.
“I think Chris Wood is the type of player that would make sense for Southampton to be targeting in the next window.”

Jones has previously told GIVEMESPORT that he expects the Newcastle centre-forward to be available in January.

The Toon spent £25m to bring the New Zealand international to St. James’ Park back in January but he managed just three goals in 28 appearances for the club.

However, the 30-year-old had reached doubled figures in each of the four previous top-flight campaigns while at Burnley.

Former BBC pundit Noel Whelan has described the £80k-per-week ace as a ‘handful’ in the past and he could prove a useful alternative for the Saints.
