Journalist Dominic Scurr was left impressed by Miguel Almiron during Newcastle United’s recent victory, despite him being questioned in the past for his impact in the final third.

The Magpies were helped by an early red card, but it was a dominant performance throughout from Newcastle.

Eddie Howe’s side cruised to a 4-1 victory and their first win since the opening day of the season, which saw them move up to seventh in the table. But the star of the show was Almiron, whose brace came despite having scored just two league goals since the start of last season prior to this weekend.

Scurr handed Almiron a 9/10 in his player ratings and was full of praise for the winger, who’s certainly had his critics during his time on Tyneside.

Writing in the Shields Gazette, Scurr said: “A sensational finish doubled Newcastle’s lead inside the first half. Scored his second of the game with a far simpler finish in the second half. Thought he’d scored a hat-trick only to be denied by the offside flag. Couldn’t ask for much more from a player whose end product has been questioned at times.”

TIF Thoughts on Almiron’s performance…

When Almiron was signed by former manager Rafael Benitez back in January 2019, the Paraguayan was the club’s record signing, taking over from Michael Owen. However, he has failed to live up to expectations when it comes to attacking output thus far.

Almiron has managed to register just 13 goal involvements in the Premier League since joining the Magpies, but today showcased he is capable of getting into the right places and producing superb finishes.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

Eddie Howe will be hoping that this is a springboard for the Magpies – who notched their first league win for nearly two months – as well as Almiron to start chipping in with more goals and becoming a bigger threat in the final third.
