Newcastle United’s pursuit of Belgium winger Leandro Trossard could prove to be a “big signing” for the club in January.

That is according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the latest transfer news at St James’ Park.

With Trossard’s contract set to expire in 2024 and the winger yet to sign an extension to his deal, the wide-man will be available to sign a pre-contract agreement with clubs from abroad.

In order to avoid losing him for a cut-price fee next summer, Brighton & Hove Albion could be forced into selling the 27-year-old in January, with Newcastle and Chelsea being two of the clubs that are reportedly interested in the Seagulls star.

And O’Rourke believes that “all the top clubs” will be observing Trossard’s contract situation at the moment, with the winger potentially facing a battle for his signature in January.

He said: “It would be a big signing for Newcastle if they were able to win the race for his signature.

“Trossard is a top player, he’s proved that at Brighton. That memorable hat-trick against Liverpool at Anfield really enhanced his potential as well.

“I think other top clubs are obviously monitoring Trossard’s situation at Brighton with his contract coming to an end in the summer and no new deal agreed as yet.

“If he’s not going to sign a new deal, maybe Brighton will be forced to cash in on him in January.”

TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments…

We believe that Trossard would represent a solid piece of business for Newcastle at a reported potential £25m, with the wide-man already having proven top-level pedigree.

The 21-time Belgium international has made 112 appearances in the Premier League since his arrival at the Amex Stadium in the summer of 2019, scoring 25 goals and providing 13 assists according to Transfermarkt.

And we think that with better players surrounding him, Trossard could be capable of taking his game to another level at St James’ Park, and we think that he would be well worth a punt at just £25m in January.
