Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson may step into a coaching role at the club when he is unable to perform at his highest level.
That is according to CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs, who was speaking on NUFC Matters about the latest news from St James’ Park.
Wilson has reportedly agreed to a new two-year deal with Newcastle after talks had been ongoing throughout the summer, with a two-year extension keeping him on Tyneside until 2026.
The former Bournemouth striker signed for the Magpies in the summer window of 2020 for a fee of about £20m from the Cherries, and has scored 23 goals in 50 appearances for the Toon according to Transfermarkt – suggesting the club have more than got their money’s worth out of the striker.
And Jacobs believes that the striker’s relationship with manager Eddie Howe could mean he may move into a coaching capacity when he is no longer the preferred option up top for the Premier League club.
He said: “There’s a huge amount of trust in Wilson – not just as a goalscorer, but as a team player and as a dressing room influence.
“And that’s why I think once he surpasses that age where he’s either integral to Newcastle or he’s part of the Newcastle United setup, he will go into a coaching capacity as well.
“And that is something that Wilson wants to learn, and who better than from Eddie Howe, because of that personal relationship.”
TIF Thoughts on Jacobs’ comments…
We believe that Wilson would be an excellent addition to Newcastle’s coaching team when he reaches the point of his playing career winding down, with the 30-year-old forward having the experience of 174 Premier League appearances to call upon.
It may also help the former Coventry City striker continue his good form, knowing that he can just focus on the here and now rather than worrying about life after football if it’s already been sorted for him.
Therefore, we think that this would be a positive agreement all-round if Wilson’s coaching future was secured under Howe.
