Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Newcastle United are concerned by interest in key midfielder Bruno Guimaraes and are hoping to tie him down to a new contact.

The Brazilian only arrived in England last January, signing from Lyon for a reported £40m, but his fine displays are already seeing him linked with a number of top Premier League clubs.

Indeed, according to Goal, Chelsea are ‘studying a proposal’ ahead of possibly making a move for the midfield maestro in the upcoming transfer window.

While speaking about this on his YouTube channel, Romano confirmed it was true that the Blues and other English clubs ‘are keeping an eye on’ Guimaraes.

However, he did also point out that Newcastle are consequently keen to hand him a new contract as they view him as the ‘face of the project for the future’.

He explained: “They [Newcastle] know that any top clubs are keeping an eye on Bruno Guimaraes. We have rumours on Chelsea, but I’m told there are also other clubs in England prepared to attack Bruno because they consider him a top player for the summer after the World Cup.

“But at the moment, Newcastle feel confident, they want to offer him a new deal, they want Bruno to be one of the faces of the project.

“They know that he is happy in Newcastle, and so they will offer him a new contract. This is the plan and they want Bruno to stay [for the] long term.

“So it’s true that there is an alert, because many important English clubs are there. But Bruno is happy there and so Newcastle will try to extend again his contract and [get him] to sign a new deal to have Bruno as the face of the project for the future.”

TIF Thoughts on Bruno Guimaraes and Newcastle…

So far this season, Guimaraes has impressed a great deal for the Magpies. Indeed, he has started all 10 of the Premier League games he has been fit for and has yet to lose a single one.

In that period, he has also scored two goals and provided two assists while earning a very impressive WhoScored average match rating of 7.39 in the English top flight – only bettered by Kieran Trippier in the Toon squad.

With that in mind, it’s no shock to hear that Chelsea are interested in the player and that Newcastle want to protect their asset with a new deal. Luckily for the club, his current contract doesn’t expire until 2026, so they seem to be in control of the situation.
