Journalist Lee Ryder has praised Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson for his stunning two-goal display in the club’s most recent win.

Playing in front of their own fans on Saturday afternoon, the Magpies hosted Aston Villa in the Premier League as they looked to maintain their impressive start to the season.

Eddie Howe’s men certainly had no trouble doing that as they blew their opponents away with an easy 4-0 win – owed to two goals from Wilson, as well as efforts from Joelinton and Miguel Almiron.

With just weeks until the World Cup, England boss Gareth Southgate was in attendance – and Ryder noted this when he delivered his Newcastle United player ratings for Chronicle Live.

The journalist handed Wilson a 10/10 for his efforts, writing: “Surely he impressed Southgate with two goals, an assist and hit the woodwork. He should be on the plane for Qatar after this.”

TIF Thoughts on Callum Wilson and  Newcastle United…

In his 86 minutes on the pitch, Wilson scored twice, set up one goal, had three shots on target and two off target, made two key passes, completed 15/19 passes (79%) and won one foul (via SofaScore).

Evidently, he was absolutely key to the win, contributing directly to three of the four goals, and was also praised by The Shields Gazette, which said he ‘linked play up well’ as he spearheaded the Toon’s attack.

No doubt, those attributes could come in handy for England this winter. In nine league games this term, Wilson has six goals and two assists, so he’s in top form, too.

His last England cap came in 2019, but he’s making a great case to return to the team for Qatar, especially with Southgate watching on at St James’ Park.
