Callum Wilson has offered his opinion as to why Newcastle United’s opening goal wasn’t ruled out on Sunday evening.

Wilson was at the heart of controversy on Sunday when Newcastle put themselves into a 1-0 lead away at Tottenham Hotspur, with many of the opposition players believing he had fouled Hugo Lloris in the process.

However, Jarred Gillett and the VAR team agreed that Wilson did nothing wrong and that it was just a coming-together between two players, much to the delight of the Newcastle striker and their fans.

Wilson has now claimed on The Footballer’s Football podcast that there was no reason why his goal should have been ruled out.

He said: “The ball’s gone over the top, I’m looking at the ball, I turn, Lloris is running at me and I stop, slam on the brakes and he just touches the ball and jumps into me – what do you expect me to do? So, for me, I’m playing on because I didn’t feel no contact.

“When you run into a brick wall, you bounce off. You come off second-best.”

TIF Thoughts on Callum Wilson’s goal…

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher claimed on Sky Sports that it certainly shouldn’t have been a foul and even praised referee Gillett for taking up a very good position so he could see the entire situation.

Wilson’s goal was the springboard that Newcastle needed in a closely contested game as they went on to double their lead just nine minutes later via Miguel Almiron – this time with no controversy.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

The Magpies have indeed been on the end of some poor VAR decisions this season, none more so than against Crystal Palace which saw them have a goal ruled out themselves for no reason, causing the PGMOL to apologise, so Wilson and the Magpies may think this decision going their way was certainly deserved.
