Journalist Andrew Musgrove claims that Callum Wilson has a clause in his Newcastle United contract which allows him to join as a coach when his deal expires.

It was somewhat low-key news on Tyneside when The Athletic reported Wilson had penned a new deal, or more of an extension, which put him in line with some of the club’s top earners, but there was no news emerging out of the club’s official social media channel to confirm the story.

Despite the club not commenting on the Wilson deal, it is huge to have someone of his ability tied down given he’s scored 23 goals in 44 league starts but the striker appears to have covered his own back and secured a long-term future off the pitch with Newcastle.

This is because Musgrove has claimed on the Everything is Black and White podcast that Wilson has a clause in his new contract which would see him able to stay with the Magpies in a coaching role.

“It’s interesting because it’s thought that this new extension for Callum Wilson also includes some sort of coaching role. I’ll tell you what, if you’re looking for a striker coach is there anyone better than Callum Wilson when he hangs up his boots?”

TIF Thoughts on Wilson’s new deal…

It is quite smart from both Newcastle and Wilson to have this option for him to become some sort of coach when he retires as it keeps a big figure around the club and also offers young players a chance to learn from a top-class Premier League striker.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

As Musgrove spoke about, there may not be many better strikers to learn from than Wilson given his record in the top flight which reads as 63 goals in just 153 Premier League starts, so it would then only help Newcastle bring through better quality of young players into their first team with the help of Wilson.
