The Chronicle’s Aaron Stokes was left in complete awe after Miguel Almiron’s superb goal for Newcastle United, as the Magpies strolled toward an impressive victory.
After a first half marred by stoppages and time-wasting, the second saw the home side take control of the tie and pick up a comfortable three points on Tyneside.
Almiron’s seventh goal of the season capped a marvellous result for the Toon as they recorded their biggest win of the campaign so far, and writing in the Chronicle’s live blog on Saturday afternoon, Stokes appeared to be taken aback by the Paraguayan’s latest heroics against Aston Villa.
He wrote: “Wowwwwwwwww, what a screamer! Almiron scores again! It’s 4!
“Oh my days, Miggy!
“Wilson finds Miggy, who picks it up outside the box, takes two touches and curls a beauty beyond Olsen – who has no chance!
“A player flourishing and looking so confident!”
TIF Thoughts on Newcastle’s performance…
Almiron seems to be going from strength to strength this term, and Newcastle’s fine season shows no signs of letting up. Indeed, the Magpies remain in the top four and have gone three points clear of Chelsea.
Perhaps the reason for Stokes being so animated is that Almiron has truly exploded into life in recent weeks. He is now just two goals shy of doubling the Premier League goals tally he had at the start of the season.
The quality of his goals is clearly an added factor to his rising stock, with Almiron also notching a superb strike against Fulham, to name just one example.
Who knows where Newcastle will end up if his form continues in this vein, but it seems clear that fans and journalists alike will be enjoying it while it lasts.
