Newcastle United will likely go into the January transfer window with a new central midfielder on the radar of Dan Ashworth.

This has been suggested by the reliable journalist Craig Hope, who has been speaking on his Instagram account following the big win on Saturday at St James’ Park.

It has been a sensational start to the 2022/23 campaign for the Magpies, who are sitting pretty in fourth spot of the Premier League table.

Newcastle’s new dawn under the PIF ownership is now one year deep, and the January window will soon mark the real start of the project on Tyneside.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

Bruno Guimaraes is the only midfielder to be signed under PIF and has made a huge difference to Eddie Howe’s side, but there have been injury issues to the likes of Jonjo Shelvey already this season.

And it seems as if there is still hope of further improvement in the upcoming January window, with the potential addition of another midfielder.

Replying to a question from a Toon fan on Instagram asking where Newcastle need to strengthen, Hope said: “On current form, there isn’t an obvious position. RW & CM were the two obvious ones, but Almirón is undroppable & they’re getting by with Bruno in the holding role. I’d say the latter might be the priority, though.”

TIF Thoughts on Hope’s comments…

Newcastle’s midfielders have shown a lot of promise this season, with the likes of Joelinton, Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock putting in some impressive performances.

Do Newcastle need to upgrade their midfield options?

However, there is still a severe lack of goals coming from that midfield – Guimaraes aside – with just two goals to their names between the aforementioned three.

With this in mind, there is definitely room for improvement, with Guimaraes already showing that he can be prone to a minor injury, with the Brazilian missing a number of games already.

Newcastle have certainly made some impressive moves in the two transfer windows under PIF so far, so it will be interesting to see how they move in the January window.
