Presenter Mark Goldbridge has urged Manchester United to go out and sign PSV forward Cody Gakpo after a recent development.

Over the summer, the Red Devils were linked with the PSV man but no deal ever materialised despite talk at one stage of a £25m bid (via Football Insider).

However, they weren’t the only Premier League team interested in Gakpo, with Leeds United also said to have wanted the player. But in a recent update on the situation, it has been reported that he will turn down the Whites in favour of a bigger club.

Reacting to this news via a video shared on The United Stand Twitter page, Goldbridge said that United have to get involved with a deal for the player as he would provide a great alternative option in their attack.

He said: “Gakpo will want, more likely, a bigger move than Leeds United – and more likely in January. He mentioned Manchester United, he also mentioned Bayern Munich and a couple of other clubs.

“I don’t know how to phrase this more than ‘this is a deal that Manchester United should do’ because Erik ten Hag wants it. I think a lot of you, the fans, would like it.

“I would like it, because I’m not expecting Cody Gakpo to go and be the next Kylian Mbappe, but what I do think is I think he’s going to be a very good striker – and Manchester United do need that profile of a forward.

“If you’ve got Rashford, Sancho, Martial, Ronaldo, Gakpo, Antony – you’ve got six there which will definitely, for this season, help you if Ronaldo needs to be rotated; if Sancho or Rashford drop out of form; if Martial gets injured.

“And for £35m in the modern market, when you’ve got us paying £85m for Antony, I think it’s a deal that Manchester United have to get involved with.”

TIF Thoughts on Cody Gakpo and MUFC…

Incredibly, despite being so early on in the season, Gakpo, who has been hailed as ‘electric‘, already has over 20 goal contributions for PSV across all competitions. Indeed, in 16 games, he has scored 13 goals and provided 10 assists (via Transfermarkt).

With that in mind, it’s little wonder Goldbridge is so keen to see Man United try and land the in-form winger. However, it may cost them a little more than the £25m they were supposedly going to pay in the summer.

There have been reports they will have to pay €45m (£39.4m) if they want to sign the 23-year-old. Still, considering the player’s form and the fact that United paid Ajax £85m to land Antony, this would seem like a relative bargain.
