The referee and VAR may have made a huge mistake in the most recent Everton match as they opted not to hand Aleksandar Mitrovic a red card.

In their latest Premier League fixture, the Toffees travelled down to London but had to settle for just a point on the road as they were held to a 0-0 draw.

Indeed, an ‘inspired display’ from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford looks to have been the difference against Fulham. However, things could have been very different had Mitrovic been punished further for his poor challenge.

The striker came in late on Everton midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye and planted his studs high into the ankle of the player without getting any of the ball – as seen in this image (via Sky Sports).

TIF thoughts on the challenge and Everton…

In the end, Mitrovic escaped with just a yellow card and VAR decided against intervening and upgrading it to a straight red card. No doubt, had that happened, Everton would have had a much greater chance of coming home with all three points.

Toffees’ manager Frank Lampard certainly seemed to think it was worthy of dismissal, he told the press after the game: “It was a red card for Mitrovic.

“I have nothing against him but he knew, he put his arm up straight away. VAR is there to deal with these things.”

With the call not going Everton’s way, they were unable to truly dominate the game with Mitrovic actually finishing the game having managed to get 10 shots off.

Luckily, Pickford kept him at bay but had the Serbian stolen a winner, Lampard’s anger would have been even more apparent after the full-time whistle.
