Steven Gerrard has been handed a timely boost as Aston Villa’s Matty Cash has been pictured back in first-team training.

Cash has missed Villa’s last two league matches after picking up a muscular injury a few weeks ago, but now Gerrard will be able to call upon his Poland international this weekend with him back in first-team training.

It is finally some good news for Gerrard, who has seen Diego Carlos and Lucas Digne head off to the treatment room in recent weeks, with both of them potentially missing this year’s World Cup.

Injury expert Ben Dinnery highlighted Cash’s emergence in first-team training, which will have left Gerrard very happy this week.

TIF Thoughts on Cash’s return…

In recent weeks, Gerrard has had to field a somewhat makeshift backline, with Ashley Young playing in place of Cash, while Jan Bednarek was drafted in to replace Ludwig Augustinsson during their game against Leeds United, so Gerrard will be very thankful to have Cash back.

Albeit amid the other injury woes present within Villa’s squad as things stand, Cash has been very impressive this season, ranking fifth for shot-creating actions and inside the top five for tackles.

It remains to be seen whether Cash starts on the weekend, although he has been cleared to return to the matchday squad, so Gerrard may have no choice but to throw him back into the starting lineup and pray he doesn’t pick up another knock as he is one of their best players, which was pointed out by Stuart Pearce, who labelled him ‘outstanding‘ earlier this year.
