Arsenal are keeping an eye on the progress of young Rangers full-back Jack Wylie.

That is according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the latest transfer news from the Emirates Stadium.

According to the Daily Record, Arsenal have been monitoring the progress of Wylie for a few months, and sent their chief youth scout Lee Herron to watch him in Spain when playing for the Scotland U16’s against Denmark U16’s.

The 15-year-old is unable to sign professional terms at Ibrox until he turns 16 in January, but the Gunners will try and snap him up so they only have to pay a minimal fee for his services.

And O’Rourke says that Arsenal are just one of a number of English clubs including Leeds United, who have been vying for Wylie’s signature.

“He’s obviously a very highly-rated young player.

“Plays for Rangers’ youth teams as well as Scotland U17’s. There’s been a lot of English clubs keeping tabs on him, after seeing his form over the last 12 months or so.

“Arsenal have been keeping regular checks on him, as have Leeds.”

TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments…

We think that Arsenal fans will be excited about the prospect of signing one the full-back, especially if it is at the expense of a number of other English clubs, as it would demonstrate the pull that the club have over many of their fellow clubs south of the border.

However, there are a lot of variables involved in a decision at such a young stage of someone’s career, including whether he’s prepared to move down to London, and whether he’ll be able to adapt to the different style of football that Premier League academies will be implementing into him.

Therefore, we think that this would be a difficult transfer to judge if it were to happen now, but if there’s a chance that Wylie can become one of the world’s leading full-backs, then it would be very smart business from Arsenal if they were to get this deal over the line.
