Sunderland’s Twitter account has dropped fresh footage showing injury-plagued striker Ellis Simms back training with the first team.

The Black Cats hosted an open training session at the Stadium of Light for the first team which allowed fans to attend and witness the squad being put through their paces by Tony Mowbray and his staff before getting pictures and autographs with their heroes in red and white.

Sunderland have struggled of late in front of goal, with Ross Stewart and Simms picking up injuries, meaning that players such as Jack Clarke and Alex Pritchard have been tasked with leading the line – but that seemingly won’t be for much longer.

This is because Sunderland have released footage showing Simms back in first-team training ahead of their clash against Luton Town on Saturday afternoon.

TIF Thoughts on Simms’ return…

It will be a major boost for Sunderland fans and Mowbray to have Simms back for the final four league games before the winter World Cup brings a halt to their season, especially given they have only found the net five times in their last six games.

Simms has been an inspired signing this season by the Sunderland board having joined on loan from Premier League outfit Everton, as before he was struck down by injury, he had managed to score three goals in just eight league appearances.

This current PL centre-back almost signed for Sunderland back in 2015.

While Stewart’s injury is expected to keep him out until after the World Cup, Simms looks to be on course for an earlier return, which should ease the pressure on some of Sunderland’s other attacking players.
