Newcastle United have shown some interest in the midfielder from Borussia Monchengladbach Kouadio Kone ahead of deadline day.

This has been suggested by the insider Dean Jones who has been speaking on his Ranks FC podcast about the Toon’s plans for the remaining hours.

It has been reported that Dan Ashworth has had his eyes on a new midfielder for Newcastle this summer with Conor Gallagher believed to be their main target.

This summer has been a measured one from the Newcastle owners who have brought in four permanent additions but no midfielders have come through the doors yet.

However, Jones believes the Magpies are one of the clubs who have made their interest known in the Bundesliga midfielder with the likes of Chelsea also said to have an interest:

“He plays for Gladbach and is attracting a lot of attention in England, primarily from Newcastle right now, but I know Chelsea have scouted him too, so I’m sure others also have him on the radar.

“Initial enquiries were over a £30m deal. I was told that won’t be enough, might be up towards £35m if you were to entice him at this stage of a transfer window.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

The 21-year-old has played a big role in the Monchengladbach squad over the last 12 months with 30 starts to his name since the beginning of last season (via Transfermarkt).

What is interesting in this is he is a player who plays a slightly deeper role to the likes of Gallagher, who has also been linked with a potential switch to Tyneside.

So with this in mind, it would be intriguing to see what role would be in store for Kone if he was to make the move with this a position which Bruno Guimaraes is expected to fill when fit.

But given the Brazilian showed his ability in attack last season, we do wonder whether Kone’s potential arrival could force Guimaraes a little higher up the pitch.
