Leeds United attempted a late move for the Blackburn Rovers striker Ben Brereton Diaz but were unable to get a deal over the line.

This has been suggested by the reliable David Ornstein who has been speaking on The Athletic’s YouTube channel about the proposed move on Thursday night.

It turned out to be a busy deadline day for the Whites who failed to conclude a move for PSV’s Cody Gakpo and Marseille’s Bamba Dieng.

However, they were able to bring in Wilfried Gnonto from FC Zurich and see Daniel James leave on loan for the rest of the season on loan to Fulham.

But it was not through a lack of trying that only one addition came through the doors at Thorp Arch on Thursday with the Chilean striker also on their radar:

“And actually Leeds United showed some late interest they explored the possibility of signing Brereton Diaz right at the death. They would have been prepared to do it, I’m told, but not at any expense at what they felt to be a right price.”

TIF Thoughts on Ornstein’s comments…

This is certainly another frustrating revelation to come from Leeds’ deadline day with Victor Orta and Andrea Radrizzani clearly keen to spend the remainder of their budget.

Who would you prefer Leeds to have signed?

Brereton Diaz enjoyed an impressive 2021/22 campaign with Blackburn Rovers where he netted 22 goals in the Championship and has already made a bright start to the new term with three in his opening seven appearances.

However, it does suggest the funds are there to be used and although Leeds were unable to get some of their deals over the line on Thursday, that money may now be available for January which should be a cause for optimism.
