Presenter Dan Lawless has stated he is ‘so happy’ for Flynn Downes after he impressed during his first start for West Ham United.

Over the summer, the midfielder, who just so happens to be a lifelong Hammer, joined the club on a five-year contract after signing from Swansea City.

However, he hasn’t made the biggest impact in the early stages of the season, playing just one minute of Premier League football so far – but was given his first start this week as he played the full 90 minutes against Romanian club FCSB (via Transfermarkt).

After the game, Lawless certainly seemed to be impressed by what he saw as the West Ham Fan TV man took to Twitter to say: “So happy for Downes smashing his first start for West Ham. Some were calling him the next Hugill but he put the work in off the pitch and showed his quality.

“It will take time but he’ll come good.”

TIF Thoughts on Flynn Downes and West Ham…

It is interesting that Lawless references former player Jordan Hugill. The striker joined West Ham for £10m back in 2018 but only went on to play three times for the club before being sold – and the fact Downes was a boyhood Hammers fan did indeed draw mentions of and comparisons to the current Norwich City striker.

Downes’ lack of game time early on in his own Hammers career may well have been good cause to make comparisons, but evidently, Lawless has more faith in the midfielder.

And to be fair to the 22-year-old, he certainly did show glimpses of his quality in the Europa Conference League clash. Indeed, in the player ratings for Football.london, he was handed a 7/10 for his efforts and praised for his ‘nice forward runs’.

What’s more, that was his fourth appearance for the Irons, so whatever happens to Downes from now on, he’ll definitely have played more than Hugill ever managed.
