Presenter Craig Mitch has slammed Tottenham Hotspur defender Emerson Royal after his most recent display.

In the Champions League this week, Spurs tasted defeat as two goals late on in the match saw them lose 2-0 away from home against Sporting.

Heading into the 90th minute, it looked as though the match was destined to end all square, only for Paulinho to head his side into the lead, before a superb solo goal from Arthur Gomes settled the game just minutes later.

While few Tottenham men impressed on the occasion, it seems as though one man, in particular, stood out for all the wrong reasons.

Indeed, in the eyes of MOTDx presenter Mitch, Emerson’s display was so poor that it left the presenter believing the defender could prove to ‘massively’ hurt his team this term.

He wrote on Twitter: “Emerson Royal will cost this team massively this season. Not replacing him is treachery.”

TIF Thoughts on Emerson Royal and Tottenham Hotspur…

It seems as though others agree that Emerson was poor on the night. Indeed, in the player ratings for Football.london, Alasdair Gold gave the defender a 5/10 for his efforts. On top of that, he noted the ‘old story’ with the Brazilian’s ‘attacking bluntness’, and highlighted his defensive weaknesses when he was ‘beaten in the air’ for the first goal and ‘skipped past with a nutmeg’ for the second.

All in all, it was a bad day at the office for the full-back, and it’s little wonder Mitch and others were not impressed. However, if manager Antonio Conte feels the same way, there are options to replace him in the squad.

Spurs have both Matt Doherty and Djed Spence as options at right wing-back, so if Emerson’s poor displays begin to truly cost the team on a regular basis, there are at least alternatives for Conte.
