Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope was slammed on Monday night for his dismal display in England’s 3-3 draw against Germany at Wembley.

The 30-year-old shot-stopper was making his second England appearance in the space of less than a week having started in Friday’s game against Italy.

However, he left a lot to be desired against Hansi Flick’s men at the national stadium on Monday night after conceding three second-half goals.

Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring from the penalty spot in which Pope was unable to get anywhere near but the error late on to see the win thrown away was what will stick with Pope the most.

And it was apparent The Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg was left far from impressed as he ripped into Pope in his player ratings with a 3/10:

“An accident waiting to happen with the ball and at fault for Germany’s equaliser. Unconvincing as Jordan Pickford’s deputy,” he wrote.

TIF Thoughts on Steinberg’s comments…

It is hard to disagree with Steinberg, really. Pope had a night to forget in front of a Wembley crowd who will have thought Harry Kane’s penalty had sealed them the win late on.

There was actually very few positives to be taken from his display with his distribution also a major concern with just 54% of his passes finding the intended target (via SofaScore).

This was certainly not the level of performance Newcastle fans have grown to expect from Pope since he made the move in the summer after impressing since his arrival on Tyneside.

However, it could well have played him out of the thinking for the World Cup squad for later this year.
