Football Daily presenter Chris Hamill has taken to Twitter to show how impressed he was by Celtic captain Callum McGregor’s performance last night in the Champions League.

It was a heartbreaking night for Celtic at home to the champions of Europe as they put up a spirited display for the majority of the match with chances spurned by Liel Abada and McGregor crashing a superb effort off the post.

However, the quality of Real Madrid shone through and they walked out of Glasgow as comfortable 3-0 winners, although Celtic’s skipper has come in for specific praise off Hamill, who claimed he was a modern great in the green and white.

Hamill was left stunned by what he saw from McGregor – someone who’s never played domestic football outside of Scotland – against one of the best teams in Europe as he tweeted: “What a journey he’s been on as a player. Didn’t think he’d find a different gear at 28/29 – but here we are.

“Never gifted anything. Underestimated at every turn.

“Remained loyal to the club in the face of PL interest. A modern great.”

TIF Thoughts on McGregor’s performance…

Despite a 3-0 loss at home for Celtic, McGregor really did stand out, not just for his stunning effort that bounced back out off the woodwork, but the fact that he tried to control the game and make his presence felt throughout.

The midfielder managed to register a team-high 77 touches, 58 completed passes, 59 carries and also managed to win two tackles (as per FBref), which is no mean feat against a side as complete and dominant as Real Madrid are, especially in the Champions League.

This English Premier League winner almost moved to Celtic.

Now 29, it is amazing that McGregor is still churning out these kinds of performances in important matches for the Bhoys and just goes to show that taking over the captaincy from Scott Brown a few years ago has seemingly only improved the midfielder.

Callum McGregor was absolutely outstanding yesterday.
He certainly didn’t look out if place amongst the ridiculously high priced Galacticos.
