During a recent appearance on NUFC Matters, journalist Ross Gregory claimed he would not rule out Newcastle United making a January move for James Maddison.
Despite spending a huge £122.4m in the summer window on the likes of Alexander Isak, Sven Botman, Nick Pope and Matt Targett, the Magpies were linked with a lot of superstars as a result of their newfound financial power.
One player they were linked with and even proposed multiple bids for was Maddison, who has become a top-level talent during his time at Leicester City, but their offers were knocked back as they moved on to other targets.
However, Gregory believes they could make another move for the player in the January transfer window, though it could depend on whether Leicester need or want to continue selling their best players in order to bring in money.
He said: “I wouldn’t rule it out. I think what I would say is going back to what I’ve said there about Leicester needing to sell and being tight on money – it was the opportunity, I think, in that window to get a player out of Leicester, and Newcastle tried for Maddison but they didn’t go in big enough.
“They ended up selling Fofana instead to Chelsea, so whether Leicester will try or need to get rid of somebody in the meantime, there’s a long time between now and January – they are already in a bit of bother.”
TIF Thoughts on Maddison to Newcastle…
The Magpies are certainly becoming one of the most exciting projects in the Premier League, and with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak and Kieran Trippier all taking their talents to the north of England, it is certainly going to attract more talented players.
We feel Maddison would be a great addition to Eddie Howe’s team, as he would bring great attacking output and creativity to the side as he ranks in the 91st percentile for non-penalty goals, in the 87th for assists and in the 79th for shot-creating actions compared to other attacking midfielders and wingers in Europe’s top five leagues over the past year.
Leicester reportedly wanted around £60m for Maddison, who has been hailed as a ‘Champions League player‘ but with his contract running out in 2024 and clubs needing to sell in order to spend in the market, they could push for another cheaper deal in the January window. It will be interesting to see if they can get this done, as surely the next two windows are Leicester’s last chances to bring in a big fee for their star.
