Newcastle United: Gregory reveals club are interested in ‘new Neymar’ Andrey Santos

|

According to journalist Ross Gregory, Newcastle United are still interested in 18-year-old starlet Andrey Santos and have been trying to build relationships with his camp.

The Magpies have started their rebuild under the Saudi Public Investment Fund in tremendous fashion as they recruited the likes of Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes, Sven Botman and Kieran Trippier over the past two windows.

With summer links to the likes of James Maddison and Jack Harrison, it would appear they are not slowing down anytime soon. However, they are not only going for Premier League-proven talents, as it has been reported they are admirers of Santos from Brazilian outfit Vasco da Gama.

Unfortunately, a deal was unable to be finalised this summer, but according to Gregory, they still hold a real interest in the player and have even sent head of recruitment Steve Nickson over to Brazil to build relationships with the player’s family and agents.

He told NUFC Matters: “Santos is somebody that they do really, really like. They are keeping a close eye on the Brazilian market, on the South American market… there is a long-standing interest with him.

“I did a piece for the Express on it. Steve Nickson went over in the summer a few months ago trying to work on the contacts there – trying to get closer to the player, trying to build relationships with his agent and his family. He’s very, very highly rated in South America… he’s been dubbed as the new Neymar.”

TIF Thoughts on Santos to Newcastle…

It looks like Newcastle will have to battle it out with a number of clubs in order to land the starlet’s signature as Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain have been linked with a move for the player this past summer.

While he has only featured 28 games for Vasco, for five goals, he has been hailed by former club legend and Brazilian international, Juninho, as a ‘monster’ and even claimed the youngster will be ‘much better than me’ and called him a ‘complete player’.

It has been reported he could cost as much as £30m, but with their new resources and devotion to signing him, as evidenced by sending Nickson to see him, they could find themselves in the driving seat to bring the next Neymar to Tyneside. This could be a very exciting deal for the club and its fans.
