Tottenham Hotspur right-backs Matt Doherty and Djed Spence need to show Antonio Conte more in training.

That is according to journalist Paul Brown, who was speaking to GiveMeSport about the latest news from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Neither right-back has really got a look-in so far this season, with Emerson Royal being the preferred choice by Conte so far this campaign, having started all eight of Spurs’ fixtures thus far.

Doherty hasn’t started a competitive game for the Lilywhites since suffering a medial collateral ligament injury back in April, whilst £20m signing Spence has made just one brief appearance for the club so far.

And Brown believes that both players could do with showing something extra in training in order to convince Conte that they can displace Royal in the side this season.

He said: “Conte knows what he’s doing, and I think he needs to see in training from those two guys a little bit more than he is before he starts putting them back in on a regular basis.”

TIF Thoughts on Brown’s comments…

Whilst we agree that there should be no reason as to why Doherty and Spence aren’t doing their best in training to dislodge Royal’s place in the team, there may be a chance that Conte drops Royal for the next fixture, following the club’s 2-0 Champions League defeat at Sporting.

With a full-throttle run of Premier League and Champions League games to come after the international break, the Italian manager may have no choice but to rotate his side amid the heavy load of fixtures, which may offer both players an opportunity to impress.

Therefore, we think that whilst both Doherty and Spence should be giving it their all in training, they might just get their opportunity under Conte if they wait patiently.
