Leicester City: Dean Jones expects James Maddison to leave next summer

Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Leicester City midfielder James Maddison will expect to have the chance to leave next season.

The past summer was not ideal for the Foxes. Indeed, the Premier League outfit saw the likes of Wesley Fofana and Kasper Schmeichel leave while only bringing in Wout Faes and Alex Smithies to try and help improve the squad (via Transfermarkt).

Fortunately, though, they managed to hold on to Maddison, who was subject to plenty of transfer interest from rival clubs such as Newcastle United – who reportedly saw a bid of £45m plus £5m in add-ons rejected by Leicester.

However, while speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones claimed that Maddison will likely have the ‘opportunity’ to leave at the end of this season.

He said: “We also need to see whether Rodgers can keep his head above water in the coming weeks and how much further upheaval there might even be in the backroom.

“So, James Maddison has just kind of got to get on with this season, knowing that at the end of the season, there probably will be an opportunity for him to go.”

Will James Maddison still be at Leicester after next summer?

TIF Thoughts on James Maddison and Leicester City…

After that bid from Newcastle, both Maddison and Leicester will know that there is interest in the player. And to be fair, having scored 12 goals in the league last season and with two in just five outings this term, the midfielder certainly possesses plenty of quality. Indeed, at the end of last season, Gary Lineker added to the hype as he called the 25-year-old ‘outstanding’

On top of that, by next summer, the Englishman’s contract will be set to expire in a year. And so, if he hasn’t signed a new deal by that stage, the Foxes will likely have to cash in on their man or risk losing him for free shortly after.

Taking it all into account, it does seem as though Maddison could soon be the next key man to follow Fofana out of the exit door at Leicester. But in more positive news, fans will probably get to enjoy the player for at least the entirety of the current campaign.
