Journalist Phil Hay has revealed that Leeds United have contacted former manager Marcelo Bielsa about renaming their training ground after him.

The Argentinian coach is currently out of a job having left the Whites in February following a dismal run of form at Elland Road.

Bielsa was a hugely popular figure amongst fans during his period in charge as he helped the club return to England’s top flight after 16 years away.

And despite things not ending so well, it seems as though those at the club still hold him in the highest esteem as they want to name the training ground after him.

In an update on the situation, while writing about the former Leeds United manager for The Athletic – Hay revealed that the question has officially been asked and they are now just awaiting a response.

He said: “As for the training ground, Leeds have written to him to ask for his permission to rename it after him. They’re waiting for a reply.”

TIF Thoughts on Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds…

It’s fair to say the former boss still holds a special place in the heart of many of the club’s loyal and devoted fans. Indeed, during his time with the Whites, a mural of his face was painted on the side of a building in the city as a way of paying tribute, such was his impact.

And while things have moved on for the club since his departure, with new manager Jesse Marsch keeping the club in the Premier League and performing well enough in the early stages of the new season, it seems as though Bielsa won’t be forgotten quickly.

Having taken charge of 170 games at Leeds and helping the club earn promotion from the Championship along the way, Bielsa is set to be honoured by the club when they rename the training ground after him – the only thing to wait for now is his permission.
