Arsenal will “touch base” with Brazil midfielder Douglas Luiz if they still have a gap in midfield when they next approach him.

That is according to journalist Dean Jones, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the latest news from the Emirates Stadium following the closure of the summer transfer window.

Sources in Brazil have indicated that Luiz will leave Aston Villa for free next summer after the West Midlands club turned down a reported bid of £23m from Arsenal for the midfielder on deadline day.

The same report suggests that the 24-year-old would like to remain in the Premier League, but is also likely to have offers from abroad as well.

And Jones believes that Mikel Arteta’s side may make another move for Luiz if they are still light in midfield next time the opportunity comes around.

He said: “Douglas Luiz, there was a frustration for them, not signing him.

“At the moment, they’re monitoring how things go for him, but they will touch base over the possibility of a new move if they still have that gap.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

We believe that Arsenal fans will be delighted to hear that the club still have a rumoured interest in Luiz and will be hoping they can secure his signature for a cut-price fee in January – or even for free next summer.

The nine-cap Brazil midfielder, who was hailed as “outstanding” by Gabriel Agbonlahor at the end of last season, has been a consistent performer for both Dean Smith and Steven Gerrard since his £15m signing for the club in the summer of 2019, making 117 appearances and scoring seven goals and providing eight assists in that time, according to Transfermarkt.

We think that as a player with plenty of Premier League experience under his belt, Luiz would prove to be a fine addition to the Arsenal midfield, especially for a fee well under his current valuation.
