Image for Rangers: Signing John Lundstram was a fantastic bit of business

Rangers’ free signing of John Lundstram in the summer of 2021, was “one of the best deals” that the club have completed in recent years.

That is according to journalist Dean Jones, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the latest news on the Gers during the international break.

Lundstram, who has been compared to Graeme Souness by the club’s former full-back Maurice Ross, was available as a free agent having left Sheffield United at the expiry of his contract in June 2021, and was snapped up by Rangers in the July of that year on a three-year deal.

Since then, the 28-year-old has made 61 appearances for the Ibrox club, scoring five goals and providing one assist, playing predominantly as a holding midfielder according to Transfermarkt.

And Jones believes that the former England U20 international has been one of the best bits of business the Glasgow giants have done in recent years.

“Lundstram has been one of the best deals they have done in recent times and keeping him on fresh terms would be a positive move in my eyes.”

How well do you remember where Rangers' signings came in from down the years? Take our quiz to find out! First up, Carlos Pena was the Gers' most expensive arrival during the summer of 2017, but where did he join from?

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments

We agree with Jones and believe that tying Lundstram down to a new deal at Ibrox would be the next logical step for the club to take, with the midfielder almost heading into the final 18 months of his contract.

An average SofaScore rating of 7.09 for his performances in the Scottish Premiership this season demonstrate a degree of consistency from the Liverpool-born midfielder, ranking him as the seventh-best performer at the club so far this campaign.

As a solid professional, we think that Lundstram is perhaps deserving of an improved deal to reflect his impressive performances on the pitch for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side.

Fully agree with this article. Lundstram seems to be enjoying his football here and is an integral part of the team. A great signing.
