Rangers: Josh Bunting slams Giovanni van Bronckhorst comments after defeat

Journalist Josh Bunting has questioned Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s comments after Rangers were heavily beaten in their most recent game.

In the Champions League this week, the Scottish outfit travelled to the Netherlands to face Ajax away from home but were thumped 4-0 in a disappointing display.

It certainly was a dreadful first half for Rangers as they shipped three goals before the 33rd minute and failed to recover in any major way from there.

Speaking after the game, manager Van Bronckhorst cut a rather defeated figure, telling the press (via Daily Mail): “To compete in the Champions League you need hundreds of millions. Otherwise, you can’t compete.

“Look at Ajax, they sold players worth over £200million. Look at Liverpool as well. For us to compete with them, it’s too much to ask.

“We want to compete but we want to compete with the squad we have and the squad we’re capable of making. We knew it would be tough and it showed today.”

In reaction to these rather defeatist quotes, Bunting took to Twitter to outline his own concerns, explaining that he felt the manager was showing a lack of faith in his team and his own coaching.

He wrote: “Wasn’t impressed at all with Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s comments after tonight’s game. Basically suggested the Champions League is a write-off, suggests absolutely no faith in his team or even his own managerial skills. Alarm bells really ringing at those statements in my opinion.”

TIF thoughts on Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Rangers…

Having led his side all the way to the Europa League final last season, Van Bronckhorst would have been hoping to make the step up to Champions League football this term but Rangers certainly struggled with the gap in quality against Ajax.

Indeed, according to SofaScore, the home side dominated statistically with a massive 75 per cent possession, 17 shots on target (Rangers had just four), and 808 passes to the away team’s 259.

Having now lost 4-0 in consecutive big games, with the Old Firm another day to forget, it’s not been a great past week for the club. However, Van Bronckhorst probably could have done a little more to lift the mood when speaking to the press after this latest defeat.
