Presenter John McGinley has been left extremely excited after Celtic are said to be closing in on a deal for midfielder Oliver Abildgaard.

In a deadline day update from trusted transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, the journalist sent out a tweet explaining that the Bhoys have a ‘deal in place’ to sign the Dane and are now just ‘waiting to sign contracts’.

If Celtic can pull this off, it will be their eighth permanent transfer of the summer – after the likes of Jota, Sead Haksabanovic and Aaron Mooy arrived.

With that in mind, the arrival of Abildgaard would be a fine way to cap off an impressive transfer window, and McGinley claimed as much on Twitter.

Indeed, in response to Romano’s update, he wrote: “What a way to end the window this would be.”

TIF thoughts on Oliver Abildgaard and Celtic…

The 26-year-old defensive midfielder was a key man for Rubin Kazan last season, playing 22 games in all competitions and even wearing the captain’s armband at times (via Transfermarkt).

With that in mind, he’ll hope to come in and be a key part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans immediately should he arrive. However, he’ll face competition for game time in the middle of the park from Celtic midfielders such as Callum McGregor, David Turnbull, Matt O’Riley, Aaron Mooy and others.

With plenty of depth in that part of the pitch, Celtic would be adding another layer of quality to the team which may well explain why McGinley is so happy with this transfer news.
