Football Daily presenter Chris Hamill has joked that Celtic star Jota should win the Ballon d’Or after his superb display in the Old Firm.

This weekend, the Bhoys cruised to a comfortable victory over their most bitter rivals. Indeed, a double from Liel Abada sandwiched Jota’s strike, before David Turnbull put the cherry on top in the 4-0 win.

On the day, Rangers seemed to be blown away by the quality of the opposition at a rocking Celtic Park, but it seems as though one man stood out in particular.

Indeed, Jota was so impressive, that upon watching the winger’s delightful goal, Hamill took to Twitter to claim: “I don’t want to overreact here – but Jota is absolutely winning the Ballon d’Or this season.”

TIF Thoughts on Jota and Celtic…

In the player ratings for Daily Record, the ‘sublime’ Jota was handed an 8/10 for his efforts and his ‘brilliant’ Celtic goal was labelled as the game’s most ‘outstanding piece of magic’.

In the league this season, the 23-year-old now has four goals and four assists in just six appearances. In fairness to Hamill, and his Ballon d’Or claim, most recent winner Lionel Messi has three goals and six assists in his first six Ligue 1 outings – so the stats are pretty comparable, although the Argentinian will surely be an outside shout for this year’s award.

Of course, the claim was made tongue in cheek, but it does show just how impressive Jota has been at Celtic this season. And with Champions League football on the horizon, he will soon have a chance to show his quality on an even bigger stage.
