Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor has been praised by journalist Derek McGregor for ‘unselfish’ display for Scotland in their most recent match.

Earlier this week, Steve Clarke’s side managed to earn themselves promotion to the top tier of the UEFA Nations League after claiming a 0-0 draw with Ukraine in Krakow.

While the BBC match report highlights the fact that Scotland ‘rode their luck at times’ and were reliable on some ‘wonderful goalkeeping’ from Craig Gordon, it seems as though another man also stepped up when needed.

Indeed, in the player ratings for The Scottish Sun, McGregor was handed an 8/10 for his efforts on the day and was praised for a number of his ‘dependable’ traits.

The journalist wrote: “Now one short of half-of-fame 50 caps. Third game in seven days and utterly dependable. So much unselfish, vital covering work. Intelligent passing, reading of game…”

Will Callum McGregor be a one-club player for Celtic?

No

According to the stats recorded by SofaScore, McGregor made one key pass, completed two clearances, won one tackle, and had  62 touches (the second most in the Scotland team). So it’s fair to say he put himself about on the day, contributing at both ends of the pitch.

That was indeed his 49th cap for his country and he has started every game in group B of the UEFA Nations League, helping Clarke and co earn promotion while proving his dependability.

In the SPFL this season with Celtic, McGregor has also been an ever-present for his side, captaining the Bhoys to six wins from seven games as they chase a league title.

At 29 years of age now, the midfielder certainly has established himself as one of the most consistent performers in Scottish football.
