Celtic star forward Daizen Maeda has been slammed by journalist Matthew Fulton for his ‘lacklustre’ performance during the side’s recent 2-0 defeat

While the Bhoys still lead and sit a the top of the Scottish Premier League table they did not help their title defence this weekend as they picked up their first loss of the season in just their seventh game.

After making a number of changes to the first team after their 1-1 Champions League draw with Shakhtar Donetsk, Celtic failed to pick up all three points away at St. Mirren thanks to goals from Mark O’Hara and Jonah Ayunga.

Ange Postecoglou’s men dominated the game with 80% possession and 18 shots compared to St. Mirren’s four but were unable to put the ball in the back of the net no matter how hard they tried.

While it is hard to pick out a Celtic forward that played well, Maeda stood out to Fulton and the Scottish Daily Express journalist slammed the Japanese winger for his performance that got him replaced at halftime.

Fulton wrote, “Daizen Maeda 4 – A little lacklustre in the first half, a poor showing from the attacker and was replaced at half time”.

TIF Thoughts on Maeda…

While Maeda has performed well this season with one goal and four assists in nine games across all competitions, it is not surprising he has been called out by Fulton for his display against St. Mirren when you look at his Sofascore stats.

In the first 45 minutes, he was on the pitch, the 24-year-old had just one shot off target with only 27 touches and 65% passing accuracy. He also won just one of his four ground duels and lost possession 10 times.

Celtic are still in the driver’s seat for the SPL title and have the chance to make the knockout round of the Champions League, but if they have many more performances like this they can kiss both of them away. Maeda’s performance was not acceptable for a player starting a team like Celtic, they are winners and he needs to play like it, or he should be dropped for the foreseeable future.
